Distinguished Service Award

2023 Deadline for Nominations is February 13, 2023

The Distinguished Service Award is presented to members who have distinguished themselves in singular and beneficial long-term service to GCAGS. It is also the purpose of the Award to acknowledge outstanding individuals who have contributed to their local geological societies, which are members of GCAGS, in such a manner as to be inspirational to the whole of GCAGS.

Restrictions

One or more members of the affiliated societies may be considered for this award in any year. Because the Honorary Membership Award acknowledges distinguished service in addition to outstanding achievement of contributions to geology, Honorary Members will not be considered for the Distinguished Service Award.

Guidelines for Consideration of Candidates

The emphasis should be on a singular (or long-term) and, at the same time, significant and valued service to GCAGS. The term singular does not necessarily mean without precedent, but rather that the activity be specific and outstanding as distinguished from general service in an activity or membership on committees. It is understood that many local geological societies do not "host" GCAGS events, and that some individuals never have a chance to directly participate in the planning and conducting of our program activities. It is the intent of this GCAGS Award to recognize outstanding individuals for activities in their local society which may directly or indirectly influence GCAGS. Any GCAGS member society may submit nominees to the Awards & Nominations Chairman.

Procedure for Recommendation

Nominations for this award should be submitted on the prescribed nomination form, along with supporting documentation and a letter of recommendation from the nominating society, to the chair of the Awards & Nominations Committee. The committee will review the nomination materials and submit their recommendation to the Board of Directors at the Mid-year Meeting. All nominations not selected for an award in any one year will be retained for future consideration in the next year and need not be resubmitted, but additional information may be submitted in order to update files. Nominations will be held for consideration for up to three years.

Description of the Award

This award is a walnut plaque bearing the GCAGS medallion in brass, the recipient's name, the designation "Distinguished Service Award" and the date awarded. The plaque will be presented by the President of the Association or by the Awards & Nominations Committee Chair.
